Galapagos Islands

I was privileged to join the Biology Faculty from BYU-Idaho on an excursion to Ecuador to visit the Amazon basin, the cloud forest (temperate forests in the foothills of the Andes), and the Galapagos Islands. It really was the trip of a lifetime. I’ve been slowly editing and categorizing photographs. I will post a few galleries of images here. For more exhaustive bird galleries, you may want to visit my flickr page here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/50655108@N05/

The Galapagos Islands were great. We were able to visit four islands (San Cristobal, Floreana, Santa Cruz, and Isabela). The landscape was spectacular. The wildlife was spectacular and approachable (great for photography). Overall it was just a great and cool place. Below are some landscape photographs and a few wildlife images. Amazon Basin (Sani Lodge), Ecuador

This post contains some images that highlight the time a couple other faculty and I spent at the Sani Lodge in the Amazon Basin. This was an amazing place and we were fortunate enough to see a wide variety of animals such as: Caiman, Giant River Otters, Vipers, Monkeys, etc. We also obviously saw great birds including: Toucans, Macaws, Parrots, Antbirds, Barbets, Cotingas, Tanagers, and many others. We were able to spend five days in the Amazon and it was so great. Below are some landscape and wildlife photos. Snow Geese and Catfish and Pisces

I drove out to Mud Lake and Market Lake today in search of spring arrivals. Spring is by far my favorite time of year, but it is so slow to arrive in these parts. It’s slowly starting though. Snow Geese have arrived in force (I saw tens of thousands), Sandhill Cranes, Mountain Bluebirds, and Ducks of all species are here, and Red-winged Blackbirds are vigorously defending territories.

Anyway, it was a great morning. I found a lot of fun birds and photographed a few dead catfish.

A Little Late Winter Wildlife

So, Spring can’t get here fast enough for me. There is still over a foot of snow on the ground and it seems like it’s going nowhere fast. The temperatures are still not quite getting above freezing most days. It’s got to break soon right? I went out to see what birds are around (still mostly winter birds) and to try to get some photographs of them. Before I left the yard a Brown Creeper was coming to the suet feeder. He allowed a fairly close approach and I got a decent photo. I then drove around Hamer and Roberts and found a few other things including Moose, Antelope, quite a few Eagles, and an accommodating Merlin. Here are some photographs.

Birding in Howe – 319 Rough-legged Hawks

Today my friend Steve and I went to Howe to look for birds. It was great. It’s one of the best places I know of to study winter Raptors, particularly Rough-legged Hawks (we found 319 of them). We also counted 7 Ferruginous Hawks (two dark morphs), 19 Red-tailed Hawks, 5 Golden Eagles, and 16 Prairie Falcons.

Common Terns

My friend Cliff and I birded Island Park Reservoir this evening. He was kind enough to bring me out on his drift boat. We were mostly looking for shorebirds, we saw a few but nothing too unusual. I did get a couple of nice photographs of Common Terns (not that common in E Idaho).

Belize Highlights – Animals

I had the opportunity to visit Belize last week with a couple of biology faculty members from the university. It was great. We spent most of our time in the forest looking for birds and other creatures. I was really in my element. Here are a few highlights of some bird and other animal photographs…

Great Horned Owl Chick

This Great Horned Owl Chick was by far the most aggressive bird I’ve ever encountered. It would hop/fly down the lane towards me. At one point it flew right at me (talons forward) and over my head onto a nearby branch. I was already on my elbows photographing it when this happened. I kind of screamed like a little girl and fell down on my face. It was pretty sweet. Anyway, here are a few photographs and a video made with the Canon 7d.
